Modern Physics is one of the most important and easy to understand topic for IIT JEE. It’s a high scoring topic and it’s part of Physics and Chemistry both.
Its not a very big topic. It can be easily understood and mastered in 2-week time.
In past few years it has become a very important topic and it accounts for more than 15% of the questions in Physics and more than 20% in Physics and Chemistry put together.
Comparison with Mechanics in Physics:
Mechanics is another important topic of Physics and you would need at least 6 months to master it and it accounts for 26% of the JEE question paper. So, return of investment is always more and easier to get in modern physics. But it doesn’t mean you should ignore mechanics :).
Even if you are just appearing for JEE Mains, it’s a topic you should concentrate on. It can be your trump card.
Syllabus of Modern Physics contains:
Atomic nucleus, Alpha, Beta and Gamma Radiations, Law of Radioactive Decay; Decay Constant; Half-life and mean life; Binding energy and its calculation, Fission and fusion processes, Energy calculation in fusion and Fission processes.
Photoelectric Effect; Bohr’s Theory, X-Rays, de Broglie wavelength of matter waves, Moseley’s Law
